Onion Tomato Chutney

Onion – Tomato Chutney is common chutney for idlies and dosas (this goes well with oats dosai too).  This chutney is a good variation from the coconut chutney.  This is prepared by frying onion and tomato along with some dhals and spices & grounding them into chutney consistency.

Ingredients:

Onion (chopped) – 2
Tomato (chopped) - 2
Whole urud dhal – 1 ½ tsp
Channa dhal – 1 ½ tsp
Red Chillies – 2
Green Chillies – 1
Ginger pieces – ½ tsp
Garlic pod – 2
Curry leaves – 8
Coriander leaves (chopped) – 1 tsp
Hing – 1 tsp
Salt – 2 tsp
Oil – 2 tsp
Water – ¼ cup
Seasoning ingredients: Oil – 1 tsp, mustard seeds – 1 tsp, broken urud dhal – 1 tsp, curry leaves – 6, hing – ¼ tsp

Method:

1. In a kadai/non-stick pan, add a teaspoon of oil and fry together: Urud dhal, channa dhal, red chillies, green chillies, ginger pieces, garlic pods, curry leaves and coriander leaves until the dhal turns light brown and the chillies are roasted and then remove.

2. Add another teaspoon of oil, add the onion and sauté till it turns light brown.

3. Then add chopped tomato and sauté till it turns mushy and then remove.

4. Cool all the above ingredients and take it to the grinder/mixer and grind in the following order
   a. First add the ingredients in step 1 and grind to coarse powder without adding water.

   b. Second add the fried onion and tomato, along with required salt and water and grind to a thick paste and remove and transfer to a bowl.

5. Season as given and pour onto the chutney and mix.

This chutney goes well with any variety of idlies and dosas. You can even have this for chapathi too.
